The British Society of Echocardiography (BSE) is a registered charity in England and Wales (no. 1093808) and a private limited company, registered in England and Wales (no. 04480121). We are registered with the Information Commissioner’s Office (no. ZA189777) in the UK under the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Our registered office is at Unit 111, The Print Rooms, 164-180 Union Street, London, SE1 0LH.

The BSE is committed to protecting and respecting your privacy. This notice sets out the basis on which any personal data we collect from you, or that you provide to us, will be processed by us. Please read the following carefully to understand our views and practices regarding your personal data and how it is protected. 

What information we collect

Information you give us

If you wish to benefit from any of the services that BSE offer via our website ( and/or to register for BSE events you may need to provide us with certain personal information. You may give us your personal details by filling in forms on our site or by corresponding with us by phone, e-mail or otherwise. This includes information you provide when you register for membership, events, electronic newsletters, printed journals, accreditations, educational services including grants and bursaries, forums or communities or any other services which we provide now or in the future and when you communicate via our website. The types of personal information we collect may include your title, first name, surname, home and work contact details (telephone, street address and email address) and your mailing address. We may also collect information relating to your employment, including where you are currently employed, your job title, areas of interest/expertise and your job function if this is relevant to your membership. When purchasing a product, your credit/debit card or bank details are also collected and are temporarily stored until we have processed your order.

 With regards to each of your visits to our website ( we may automatically collect the following information:

  • technical information, including the Internet Protocol (IP) address used to connect your computer to the Internet, your login information, browser type and version, time zone setting, browser plug-in types and versions, operating system and platform
  • information about your visit, including the full Uniform Resource Locators (URL) clickstream to, through and from our site (including date and time); products you viewed or searched for; page response times, download errors, length of visits to certain pages, page interaction information (such as scrolling, clicks, and mouse-overs), and methods used to browse away from the page.

We may receive information about you if you use any of the other websites we operate or the other services we provide. How we handle your personal information

 The BSE respects the privacy of its members and website users and aims to act consistently with the EU General Data Protection Regulations and the 6 principles of data protection. 

We will not, unless otherwise stated, share your personal information with any third parties but if you choose to purchase any subscriptions, services or publications from us we will pass your personal information to a secure, third-party payment service provider and any such third party will require further information from you in order to process your payment. 

If you subscribe to or request copies of our publications we may need to provide details of your name and address to third parties for the purpose of dispatch and distribution. This information will always be provided with a prohibition on use other than for the purpose for which it is specifically provided.

Where we store your personal data

We will take all steps reasonably necessary to ensure that your data is treated and stored securely and in accordance with the BSE privacy policy. The data that we collect from you may be transferred to, and stored at, a destination outside the European Economic Area (“EEA”). It may also be processed by staff operating outside the EEA who work for us or for one of our suppliers. Such staff may be engaged in, among other things, the facilitating of services which you have requested or which we provide, the processing of your payment details and the provision of support services. By submitting your personal data, you agree to this transfer, storing or processing.

Our systems operate secure data networks protected by industry standard firewall and password protection systems. Where we have given you (or where you have chosen) a password which enables you to access certain parts of our site, you are responsible for keeping this password confidential. We ask you not to share a password with anyone. We periodically review our security and privacy policies and update them as necessary. 
Unfortunately, the transmission of information via the internet is not completely secure. Although we will do our best to protect your personal data, we cannot guarantee the security of your data transmitted to our site; any transmission is at your own risk.
