Call for STP mentees

Published 27/05/2026

Supporting our members on the journey to statutory registration remains a key strategic priority for the British Society of Echocardiography (BSE).

For cardiac physiologists, statutory registration is achieved through registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a clinical scientist. There are currently two routes to this - completion of the Scientist Training Programme (STP) MSc, or application for STP equivalence via the Academy for Healthcare Science (AHCS).

We are keen to ensure that all members who wish to pursue STP equivalence feel well supported throughout the process. While support has improved in recent years - including sessions offered by SCST and AHCS - we recognise that equivalence can still feel like a long and isolating journey. This can be particularly true for colleagues working in smaller or more remote centres, or those without strong peer support locally.

We have now partially launched the STP equivalence buddy system with mentors in place ready to support those of you going through equivalence. We will pair you with an appropriate mentor who has already been through the process using an arms-length peer-support approach and who can offer guidance when needed.

We are now seeking expressions of interest from members who would like further mentor support. To be eligible, mentees should:

  • Be a current BSE member
  • Hold BSE level 2 accreditation
  • Currently be undertaking STP equivalence via AHCS

You will receive support primarily on portfolio evidence and preparation for the interview process.

We would welcome mentees from all regions and across the devolved nations, and from all types of centres. We are especially keen to hear from those members working in smaller or more remote centres, where local peer support can be limited.

If you are interested in becoming an STP equivalence mentee, please complete and return the form below to [email protected].
