Published 29/07/2024

The British Society of Echocardiography (BSE) and partners are delighted to share updated resources designed to assist with triaging of echo referrals in emergency inpatient and critical care.

The new guidance includes the following changes:

  • New recommendations using NT-proBNP age cut-offs to help with triage for suspected acute heart failure
  • Updated guidance on echocardiography in myocardial infarction
  • Updated triage guidance for stroke

The guidance has been developed in partnership with the following organisations:

  • British Cardiovascular Intervention Society
  • British Cardiovascular Society
  • British Heart Rhythm Society
  • British and Irish Association of Stroke Physicians
  • British Society for Heart Failure
  • GIRFT Anaesthetic and Perioperative medicine (APOM) team
  • Intensive Care Society

Professor Dan Augustine, President of the BSE, said “This update of the triage guidance has been a big project, bringing together eleven national societies to offer contemporary, specialist advice on echocardiography triage. It’s important that we have had input from primary and secondary care and I’d like to thank all of the society representatives for their help.”
